Zimbabwe stands as one of the most developed countries in Southern Africa. In the last three decades, the country managed to nearly double its contraceptive prevalence rate – from 38% in 1984 to 67% in 2014.
Although the numbers are impressive, the country's ongoing economic troubles could start worsening the trends and reverting the gains made in access to contraception.
But what does this mean for women seeking safe abortion services? Due to highly restrictive abortion laws, each year, more than 70,000 women undergo unsafe abortion, with Zimbabwean women running a 200 times greater risk of dying due to unsafe abortion complications than their counterparts in South Africa, where the procedure is legal.
Due to highly restrictive abortion laws, each year more than 70,000 women undergo life-threatening unsafe abortion procedures.
Our programme in Zimbabwe, known as Population Services Zimbabwe (PSZ), was established in 1987 and is now one of the country's largest and most specialised sexual and reproductive health organisations.
We provide a wide range of high quality, affordable and client-centred services and information to women, men and young people through a network of 11 centres, more than 124 BlueStar social franchisees and 1,200 outreach sites that focus on reaching those who need our services most.
HIV rates in Zimbabwe continue to be high; therefore we have integrated HIV counselling and testing into all our service delivery channels, and provide referrals for care and treatment if needed.
