Following the FP2020 Reference Group meeting in London this week, Marie Stopes International is today reconfirming its pledge to provide 12 million additional users with a long-term method of contraception by 2020. This is double the number that we originally committed to at the London Summit on Family Planning.
We are also reconfirming our focus on reaching young people and ensuring that they can have children by choice, not chance.
In our Scaling-Up Excellence strategy we’ve committed to providing millions more young people (15-24 year olds) and adolescents (15-19 year olds) with contraception. Today we are quantifying that commitment. As well as reaffirming our pledge to reach 12 million additional users, we are also pledging that by the end of the FP2020 period (2012-2020) we will have provided a modern method of contraception to:
6 million adolescents (15 – 19 year olds)
25 million young people (15 – 24 year olds)
This is a bold and ambitious pledge but there are tens of millions of young women and girls who want to take control of the future and fulfil their right to choose when they have children. As an organisation and as a sector we owe it those young women and girls to be bold and ambitious and to do more.
