What we do in Sierra Leone?
Marie Stopes Sierra Leone opened its first clinic in 1986 and is now the largest specialised family planning organisation in the country, providing almost half of all family planning services in Sierra Leone.
We provide a full range of high quality, affordable and client-focused sexual and reproductive health services to women, men and young people.
We provide the majority of long-acting and permanent methods (LAPMs) of contraception, such as the implant which we introduced in 2008. Over half of these are LAPMs delivered to hard to reach communities in rural parts of the country and urban slums.
We work closely with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, and are a key partner in the Government’s ‘Free Health Care’ strategy.
We work in coordination with local government authorities to ensure our outreach teams are reaching areas where service provision is limited, as part of our mission: children by choice, not chance.
How we deliver services
Our 12 centres offering a full range of sexual and reproductive healthcare services. Our obstetrics centre in Freetown provides maternity services, 24 hours a day.
We have 13 outreach teams travelling to hard to reach parts of the country, offering long-acting and permanent contraceptive services to those who most need them. In 2012, we launched a boat-based outreach team to bring services to coastal and riverine communities with extremely limited access to healthcare services.
Our 130 social franchisees, operating under through Marie Stopes International’s BlueStar brand, are expanding service delivery and contributing to national health goals by engaging private providers.
