Centres

Our centres offer a range of services and are a backbone for our operations in many countries.

Marie Stopes International started life as a clinic-based organisation, expanding from one centre in London to a global network of more than 600 centres across the 42 countries where we work.

While the majority of our clients access our services through other routes, such as mobile clinical outreach teams or social franchises, the centres (static clinics) are a backbone for our operations in many countries.

Our clients are the focus of everything we do

Our clients are the focus of all our work. That's why our centres are designed to be comfortable, non-intimidating environments where women, men and adolescents can get information about their reproductive choices and access high quality services.

The core services include: family planning, safe abortion (where permitted), post-abortion care, maternal and child healthcare, and diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Some centres also provide basic primary healthcare such as child vaccinations and malaria treatment. And several have a general laboratory testing facility or a dispensary attached to them.

A vital base for training and logistics

Our network of centres now serves as a vital base for training and logistics to support mobile clinical outreach teams, community based distributors and social franchisees.

In many countries, they act as gold standard demonstration sites to host governments and other providers interested in adopting a client-focused approach, or learning about our approach to confidentiality, service quality or safety. In this way they are contributing to the building of a sustainable local health system.

Centres are often based in cities, many of them in urban slums. Those in wealthier areas aim to generate income to subsidise centres in urban slums and outreach to poorer clients.

As with all our services, the quality of care on offer in our centres is constantly monitored to ensure they meet our global standards of clinical excellence.
