Our Impact
Millions of the world's poorest and most vulnerable women trust Marie Stopes International to provide them with quality family planning and reproductive healthcare.- the number of men and women using our contraceptives in 2010 exceeded seven million
- an estimated 1 million or more women accessed our services for a safe abortion (where legally permitted) or for treatment of complications relating to unsafe abortion
- client exit interview data suggests that over 90% of clients in all countries for all delivery channels were satisfied with our services, reporting that they would recommend our services to a friend and that they would return to us for future services
- 99% of our health impact is in developing countries
- 60% of services are delivered for free or heavily subsidised prices through mobile outreach programmes to hard to reach communities.
At Marie Stopes International our clients are at the centre of everything we do; through our innovation and partnerships, underserved women and couples are able to access services and make choices about their sexual and reproductive health.- we always seek new ways to deliver services to clients and use innovative approaches such as social franchising, demand side financing, community-based distribution, and social marketing
- our social marketing programmes increases access to affordable condoms, contraceptive pills and emergency contraception through pharmacies and non-clinical settings, the aim is to bring these short term methods closer to the client and to provide an opportunity to offer information and referrals to outreach or clinic facilities for clients who may be interested in longer-acting or permanent methods
- social franchising allows us to scale up access to high quality clinical family planning and sexual and reproductive health services rapidly through partnerships with existing private and sometimes public healthcare providers; these partnerships allow women in urban slums, smaller towns and villages to have convenient access to a range of choices.
By providing high quality services where they are needed the most, Marie Stopes International prevents unnecessary deaths and makes a sustainable impact on the lives of millions of people every year.- using the Marie Stopes International Impact Estimator, we estimate that the services provided by us in 2010 will prevent approximately:
i. 4.8 million unintended pregnancies
ii. 13,600 maternal deaths
iii. 1.3 million unsafe abortions
iv. 3.1 million disability adjusted life-years (DALYs).
- our 629 centres, across 40 countries, form the backbone of the organisations service delivery infrastructure and in many countries act as gold standard demonstration sites to host governments and other providers that want to adopt a client-focussed approach
- extending from the centres are our clinical outreach teams who provide services to hard to reach populations in approximately 6,000 rural locations and urban slums; these teams bring family planning choices to women and men in rural and remote areas who otherwise would have access to only short term methods or no family planning at all
- in 2010, 60% of clients accessed our contraceptive services through mobile clinical outreach programmes, 18% went to one of our centres, 17% accessed services though social marketing and 5% through social franchise clinical networks.
Investment in Marie Stopes International allows us to contribute to the strengthening of national health systems by saving them money- the savings to healthcare systems resulting from our 2010 service provision will be approximately £428 million through reductions in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality and unsafe abortion
- for every £1 of donor money spent by our programmes, £7 will be saved by health systems in developing countries
i. in Africa, for every £1 spent, £7.64 will be saved
ii. in Asia Pacific, for every £1 spent, £9.53 will be saved
iii. in South Asia, for every £1 spent, £13.00 will be saved
iv. in Latin America, for every £1 spent, £2.06 will be saved.
