Abortion & Vasectomy Services - Marie Stopes Clinics
What we do

We are one of the largest international family planning organisations in the world. Millions of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable women trust Marie Stopes International to provide them with quality family planning and reproductive healthcare.

In 2010 alone, our 629 centres, across 40 countries provided seven million couples with high quality health services, including family planning; safe abortion & post-abortion care; maternal & child health care including safe delivery and obstetrics; diagnosis & treatment of sexually transmitted infections; and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Our clients are at the centre of everything we do

Our centres form the backbone of the organisation's service delivery infrastructure and in many countries act as gold standard demonstration sites to host governments and other providers that want to adopt a client-focussed approach.

And extending from the centres are our clinical outreach teams who provide services to hard to reach populations in approximately 6,000 rural locations and urban slums. These teams bring family planning choices to women and men in rural and remote areas who otherwise would have access to only short term methods or no family planning at all.

We always seeks new ways to deliver services to our clients, including  social franchising, demand side financing, community-based distribution, and social marketing.

Through our innovation and partnerships, underserved women and couples are able to access services and make choices about their sexual and reproductive health.

Preventing unnecessary deaths and making a sustainable impact on the lives of millions of people every year

In 2010, 60% of clients accessed our contraceptive services through mobile clinical outreach programmes, 18% went to an Marie Stopes International centre, 17% accessed services though social marketing and 5% through social franchise clinical networks.

Using our Impact Estimator, we estimate that the services provided by Marie Stopes International in 2010 will prevent approximately:

  • 4.8 million unintended pregnancies
  • 13,600 maternal deaths
  • 1.3 million unsafe abortions
  • 3.1 million disability adjusted life-years (DALYs)
