HIV/STIs research
In MSI’s African programmes, research is used to improve access and uptake of integrated HIV and reproductive health services.

Research has focused on identifying and assessing innovative models for scaling-up male circumcision services for HIV prevention and includes:
  • measurement of complications prevalence: understanding complication rates associated with male circumcision programmes is crucial for rolling out safe, high quality scale-up initiatives
  • in Kenya, MSI is conducting a prospective study on the prevalence of complications in a programme providing male circumcision services to remote areas on an outreach basis.

Key results from A Prospective study on male circumcision complication prevalence in Kenya:
  • approximately 96% of participants reported that the main reason for having the male circumcision procedure was for partial protection against HIV
  • the overall prevalence for complications was 1.3% among 240 procedures
  • 92% of study participants were able to resume normal work activities by their 3rd and 7th day follow-up visits.
