HIV / STIs

There are almost 40 million people worldwide living with HIV; two thirds of those are in sub-Saharan Africa. Every minute, 10 people are infected with HIV and 650 people are infected with a curable sexually transmitted infection.

Marie Stopes International (MSI) works to reduce the number of new infections by providing an integrated package of services, including:

  • the development of information, education & communication and behaviour change communication campaigns and materials
  • condom distribution
  • voluntary counselling & testing (VCT)
  • STI diagnosis & treatment
  • preventing mother-to-child transmission
  • male circumcision
  • community participation activities
  • treatment of opportunistic infections such as tuberculosis
  • facilitating referrals of HIV positive clients to agencies that can offer treatment options
  • links with local and national HIV or AIDS agencies and organisations

Marie Stopes International particularly targets those groups most vulnerable to HIV, such as young people, men who have sex with men, and sex workers.
