Case Study: UNFPA provides vital commodities to Marie Stopes International Mali

UNFPA’s valuable support to Marie Stopes International Mali has been critical to the programme’s ability to deliver continuous family planning services during contraceptive stock-outs in government pharmacies.

Mali received a range of vital commodities from the UNFPA grant including:

  • 1,000 implants
  • 1,580 IUDs
  • 1,000 injectable contraceptives
  • 2,899 oral contraceptives (cycles)
  • 300 emergency contraceptives.

In Mali, contraceptive stock-outs are common and consistent access to short term contraceptives is poor. In 2009 to early 2010, the government pharmacy experienced stock-outs of long-acting methods, including both implants and IUDs.

At the root of this was an underestimation of contraceptive commodity needs for 2009, partly due to new demand generated by the launch of the Marie Stopes International’s country programme in Mali.
Donations of implants and IUDs by UNFPA in 2009 and 2010 allowed Marie Stopes International Mali to continue operating its outreach teams during the stock-out period.

Without these donations, it is likely that at least one outreach team would have temporarily suspended service delivery, depriving much needed family planning services to thousands of women in rural areas.

The total CYPs provided by the UNFPA donation to Marie Stopes International Mali was 12,488. Marie Stopes International’s Impact Estimator predicts that these CYPs will avert:

  • 2,604 unintended pregnancies
  • 272 unsafe abortions
  • 16 maternal deaths.
